Meet Lucia Báez-Geller

The daughter of a Cuban father and Colombian mother, Lucia grew up witnessing the courage and sacrifice that define the American Dream. Her father fled communism in Cuba in the 1980s, surviving a month with almost no food or water while seeking refuge at the Peruvian Embassy before finally reaching the United States. Lucia was raised by her single mother, who worked multiple jobs to ensure her daughter had every opportunity to succeed.

Lucia became the first in her family to attend college — an experience that shaped her lifelong commitment to education and standing up for equal opportunity for every resident of District 106.

From 2005 to 2020, Lucia taught English and Language Arts at Miami Beach Senior High, where she connected with and inspired thousands of students. Her leadership in education earned her the National Education Association’s Political Advocate of the Year Award in 2013, and she has worked with numerous organizations dedicated to expanding educational opportunity, including the Educational Excellence School Advisory Council, the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the League of Women Voters.

Lucia earned her undergraduate degree from Spring Hill College and later received both a Master’s in English Education and an Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University.

In 2020, Lucia was elected to the Miami-Dade County School Board, where she continued fighting to strengthen public schools, keep students safe, and ensure every child can succeed.

She lives in Miami Beach with her husband, David Geller, and their young daughter. Lucia is also an active volunteer feeding the homeless, advocating for lower costs for families, protecting access to affordable healthcare and bringing civility to our community.

Strengthen healthcare access

Florida healthcare costs are surging in 2026, with ACA marketplace premiums increasing by 20–40% for many, threatening to price over 1 million residents out of insurance. Lucia will protect women’s healthcare autonomy, expand access to affordable healthcare, and fight lower prescription drug costs so every family can get the care they need.
